What's involved with a Labioplasty?
A labial reduction, or labioplasty, involves removing the excess tissue of the labial minora to improve the shape and bulkiness to improve comfort and satisfaction. Many women may find the labia to be uncomfortable, embarrassing, and bothersome. They may find it difficult to wear certain underwear or bathing suits, and may have sexual dissatisfaction or dyspareunia (pain with intercourse). Large labia minora can be a common problem that women either disregard or feel embarrassed to talk about.
A labioplasty can dramatically improve your self-esteem and comfort, and make you feel more confident about your body. Dr. Sharma will sit down with you to discuss your goals for the surgery and review in detail how the procedure is performed to get you the look you deserve.

Incisions are typically placed along the outer portion of the labial minora with either a wedge resection or a longitudinal trim to remove the excess mucosal tissue. The scar line tends to heal up very well and is often inconspicuous. Dr. Sharma will discuss the pros and cons of the surgery and develop a treatment plan that best suits your individual needs.

What happens on the day of surgery?
Surgery takes place in the operating room with you either awake under local anesthetic or asleep under a general anesthetic, and can take around 1-2 hours. Markings are first made to plan the areas of tissue excision. Local anesthetic is placed to minimize any discomfort during the procedure and afterward. The tissue is removed and the incisions are carefully closed with all dissolving stitches. After surgery, all post-operative instructions and prescriptions will be given to you before going home. You will be able to go home the same day of surgery with a responsible adult.

What happens after surgery?
Recovery is a gradual process. The first 1-2 days you may need some of the prescribed pain medications. Most patients are needing only Tylenol or Advil after that. You will be able to shower and wash daily after 2 days. Generally it is a good idea to take a few days off work, depending on what type of work you do. At 3-4 weeks from surgery you will typically feel fully recovered. You will have to avoid intercourse and vigorous exercise up until about 6 weeks from surgery. The final shape and contour can take up to 3 months before all residual swelling is resolved.
