What's involved with Liposuction?
Liposuction, or suction-assisted lipectomy, involves removing the fat that lies between the skin and the muscle layer through a few small 0.5cm incisions, in order to improve the shape and contour of the region, making it flatter, with better definition, and more attractive. This is commonly done in areas that are reservoirs of subcutaneous fat that can be difficult to get rid of through diet and exercise alone. These common areas include the abdomen, flanks, waistline, bra roll areas, back, upper arms, thighs, and neck. During the procedure, fluid is injected through small incisions placed strategically in hidden locations in order to reach the targeted areas of fat. The liposuction cannula is then inserted to suction out the fluid and the fat. The cannula is passed back and forth to break up the fat cells and the suctioning allows the fat to be collected into a canister. This technique preserves the small blood vessels and nerve endings to the skin. Sometimes power-assisted liposuction (PAL) is used to help extract even more fat in a safe and effective manner.
Liposuction is a great tool to use to help contour various parts of the body and can dramatically improve the definition of the underlying muscles, while being minimally invasive. It can be done as a sole procedure, or combined with other operations in which skin and fatty tissue is cut out, such as a tummy tuck or breast reduction procedure. Patients may choose to have liposuction done because they have focal areas of fatty deposits that do not seem to improve with diet and exercise. Liposuction can improve your self-esteem and make you feel more proportioned, more comfortable in clothing and bathing suits, and more confident about your body in general. Dr. Sharma will sit down with you to discuss your goals for the surgery and the look you are hoping to achieve.

Incisions are typically placed in inconspicuous areas near natural folds or creases to hide the small 0.5cm to 1cm scars. Dr. Sharma will discuss the pros and cons of the surgery and develop a treatment plan that best suits your individual needs.

What are the important considerations?
There are a variety of factors that go into making a decision about liposuction. Dr. Sharma will discuss your options with you. It is important to remember that liposuction will not address any excess loose skin in the region, and sometimes excision of tissue may be another option that can be combined with liposuction to get the look you want.
Dr. Sharma has also trained in using a cutting edge technique, known as SAFELipo®, which allows for Separation, Aspiration, and Fat Equalization as three distinct steps to provide the best liposuction results, and minimize contour irregularities as much as possible. It is important to remember that liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss and a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Patients are often very happy with their results after liposuction, since this operation has the ability to dramatically improve one’s shape and figure, with a flatter more toned look to each area. Several areas can be addressed at the same time, and Lipo360 can be done to liposuction the abdomen, flanks, waist, and back circumferentially to provide a nice aesthetic contour.
